The Meta Quest 3 is still the best all-round standalone VR headset for most players. It costs $499.99 for the 512GB model, runs games without a PC, and handles full-color mixed reality better than anything near its price. Below I cover what I’d tell a friend before buying, plus how to get through the first hour without headaches.
What the Meta Quest 3 headset actually is
People still search for the “Meta Oculus Quest 3”. The Oculus name was retired, but it is the same line. The Quest 3 is a self-contained virtual reality headset with its own Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, battery and storage, so you can play anywhere you have a bit of floor space. It can also stream PC VR over Wi-Fi or a USB-C cable, which makes it a bridge to SteamVR without buying a second headset.

Quest 3 or Quest 3S?
This is the real buying decision. The Quest 3S launched in October 2024 at $299.99 (128GB) and $399.99 (256GB). It has the same processor, the same Touch Plus controllers and the same game library.
The difference you notice is the optics. The 3S uses older Fresnel lenses at 1832 x 1920 per eye with a narrower view, and the image gets blurry outside a central sweet spot. The Quest 3’s pancake lenses stay sharp almost edge to edge, text is far easier to read, and passthrough looks cleaner thanks to its depth sensor. After a few months with both, I reach for the Quest 3 every time.
My take: if $200 matters, the 3S plays everything. If you plan to watch media, use virtual desktops or play long sessions, pay for the Quest 3. Meta’s refurbished Quest 3 units are a good middle path when they’re in stock.
Comfort out of the box

The stock fabric strap is the weakest part of the package. It puts most of the weight on your face, and by the 40-minute mark I can feel it on my cheekbones. A rigid head strap with a rear counterweight or battery fixes that, and it’s the first thing I’d pick from our “meta quest 3 accessories” list.
Glasses fit inside. The facial interface has a depth adjustment for frames, and a dial on the bottom sets lens spacing from roughly 53 to 75mm. Set it properly before judging the image. Prescription lens inserts are worth it if you play often.
Comfort check
Start with stationary or teleport-movement games for 15 to 20 minutes and stop the moment you feel queasy. Clear your play space of pets, furniture and ceiling fans before every session.
Setting up your first session
Quick steps: first-time setup
- Charge the headset fully.
- Install the Meta Horizon app on your phone.
- Power on and pair with the app.
- Adjust strap, glasses spacer and IPD dial.
- Draw your boundary and update the software.
The software update often takes 10 to 20 minutes on day one, so do it before handing the headset to an excited kid. Turn on the room scan when prompted, because mixed reality games use it to place objects on your real walls and tables. Then open First Encounters, the preinstalled demo. It’s the best five-minute explanation of what this headset does that I’ve found.
What to play first

The Meta Horizon Store carries the big standalone hits, and Steam Link lets you stream your PC library if you have a capable gaming PC. My starter picks:
- Walkabout Mini Golf: seated or standing, very comfortable, perfect for new players.
- Beat Saber: standing, moderate effort, the best workout-adjacent game on the platform.
- Batman: Arkham Shadow: room-scale action with comfort options, a full 15-plus hour campaign.
- Asgard’s Wrath 2: huge RPG, best saved for when you have your VR legs.

Player tip
Set the refresh rate to 120Hz in settings for supported apps. Battery drops a little faster, but motion looks noticeably smoother.
Should you wait?
Meta has not announced the “meta quest 4“, and anything you read about it now is rumor. I wouldn’t hold off for hardware with no date. One more clarification: Meta also sells Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses. They’re camera and audio glasses, not a VR headset, and they come with their own privacy rules covered in our piece on “smart glasses bans and regulation“.
FAQ
Is the Meta Quest 3 still worth buying?
Yes. It runs every current Quest game, gets regular software updates and has the clearest lenses under $500.
Do I need a PC for the Meta Quest 3?
No. It’s fully standalone. A PC is optional for streaming SteamVR games.
How long does the battery last?
Meta rates it at about 2.2 hours on average. Heavy games drain it faster, and a battery strap roughly doubles your play time.
Can kids use it?
Meta sets the minimum age at 10, with parent-managed accounts for ages 10 to 12. Keep sessions short and supervised.
