This page explains what information A-Rage VR collects when you visit this site, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. We are a small, independent site about VR, AR and mixed reality, and we have tried to write this in plain English.
Who we are
“We,” “us” and “this site” refer to A-Rage VR at a-rage.com. We publish news, guides, reviews and tools for people who play and use virtual, augmented and mixed reality. You do not need an account to read anything here.
The short version
- We collect very little about you, and most of it is collected automatically by the technology that runs any website.
- We do not ask for your name, address or payment details to read the site.
- We do not sell your personal data.
- Some cookies come from outside services, such as analytics, advertising or embedded videos. You can control these.
- You can ask us what we hold about you and ask us to delete it.
Information collected automatically
Web server logs
Like almost every website, our hosting servers keep standard logs each time a page is requested. A log entry typically includes:
- Your IP address
- The date and time of the request
- The page or file requested
- The referring page, if your browser sends one
- Your browser type and operating system (the “user agent”)
- Whether the request succeeded or produced an error
We use these logs to keep the site running, fix broken pages, spot abuse such as spam or attacks, and understand basic traffic levels. We do not use server logs to build a profile of you.
Device and usage information
If we use an analytics service (see below), it may record general details such as which pages you viewed, how long you stayed, your approximate location at country or city level, your screen size and the device type. This helps us learn which articles are useful and which need work.
Information you choose to give us
If you contact us, for example by using a contact form or replying to us, we receive whatever you send: usually your name, email address and message. We use it only to reply and to keep a record of the conversation. We do not add you to a mailing list unless you ask to join one.
If we later offer comments, newsletters or other features where you submit information, we will explain what is collected at the point you submit it.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. Similar technologies include local storage and tracking pixels. We group them as follows.
| Type | What it does | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Keeps the site working and secure, remembers your cookie choices | This site |
| Preferences | Remembers settings such as theme or tool options | This site, stored in your browser |
| Analytics | Counts visits and shows how pages are used | Analytics partners we may use |
| Advertising | Shows ads, limits repeats, measures performance, and may personalise ads | Advertising partners we may use |
| Embedded content | Lets videos and social posts play and function | The platform hosting the content |
Analytics partners
We may use a third-party analytics service, such as Google Analytics or a similar tool, to understand how readers use the site. These services set their own cookies and process data under their own privacy policies. Where we can, we configure them to limit data collection, for example by shortening or anonymising IP addresses.
Advertising partners
To keep the site free, we may show ads served by third-party advertising networks, such as Google AdSense or similar providers. These partners may use cookies, device identifiers and similar technologies to:
- Show ads and measure whether they were seen or clicked
- Prevent fraud
- Personalise ads based on your visits to this and other websites, where the law allows and where you have consented if consent is required
Ad partners act under their own privacy policies. Most offer ways to opt out of personalised advertising through their own ad settings pages and through industry opt-out tools.
Managing cookies
You have several options:
- Use the cookie banner or settings on this site, where shown, to accept or reject non-essential cookies.
- Change your browser settings to block or delete cookies. Every major browser supports this.
- Use your browser’s private or incognito mode.
Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site from working properly. Blocking analytics or advertising cookies will not stop you reading anything.
Embedded content from other sites
Articles on this site may include embedded content such as YouTube videos, trailers, social media posts or clips from other platforms. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website directly.
Those platforms may collect data about you, set cookies, load their own tracking, and record your interaction with the embedded content, especially if you are logged in to an account with them. We do not control what they collect. Please check the privacy policy of the relevant platform if you are concerned.
Where possible, we use privacy-friendlier embed options, such as versions of video players that do not set cookies until you press play.
Tools that run in your browser
Some tools on this site, such as calculators, comparison tools or settings helpers, run entirely inside your browser. Where a tool says it runs in your browser, the information you enter is processed on your own device and is not sent to our servers. If a tool saves your inputs, it does so in your browser’s local storage, which you can clear at any time through your browser settings.
If a tool ever needs to send data to a server to work, we will say so on that tool’s page.
How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- Run, maintain and secure the site
- Fix errors and improve performance
- Understand which content readers find useful
- Show advertising that helps fund the site
- Reply to messages you send us
- Meet legal obligations
We do not use your information to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Legal basis for processing
Where privacy laws require a legal basis, we rely on:
- Legitimate interests for server logs, security and basic site operation
- Consent for non-essential cookies, analytics and personalised advertising where consent is required
- Your request when you contact us and expect a reply
- Legal obligation where we must keep or disclose information by law
You can withdraw consent at any time through the cookie settings on this site or your browser.
Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not rent or trade it.
Information may be shared only with:
- Service providers that help us run the site, such as web hosting, content delivery, security and email services. They process data on our behalf and only for that purpose.
- Analytics and advertising partners as described above, through the cookies and scripts they set.
- Authorities, if we are legally required to, or where needed to protect the site, our readers or others from harm or fraud.
If the site is ever transferred to a new owner, reader data would pass to them under the same protections described here.
How long we keep data
We keep information only as long as we need it:
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Server logs | Usually up to 90 days, unless needed longer to investigate a security issue |
| Analytics data | Kept in aggregate; individual-level data is retained according to the shortest practical setting offered by the provider, typically no more than 14 months |
| Messages you send us | As long as needed to deal with your query, then deleted within a reasonable period unless we need to keep a record |
| Cookies | From the end of your browsing session up to the expiry set by each cookie, which you can clear at any time |
| Browser-based tool data | Stays on your device until you clear it |
Third-party partners keep data according to their own retention policies.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy
- Correct information that is wrong
- Delete your personal data
- Object to or restrict how we use it
- Withdraw consent for cookies or other processing based on consent
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data for targeted advertising, where local law gives you that right (we do not sell personal data, but some laws treat certain ad cookies as “sharing”)
- Complain to your local data protection authority
To make a request, contact us using the contact options on this site. We may need to ask for information to confirm the request comes from you. We will respond within the time required by the law that applies to you, and we will not charge you for a reasonable request.
Keep in mind that we hold very little that can identify you directly. For data collected by analytics, advertising or embedded platforms, you will often get faster results by using those companies’ own privacy tools.
Security
We use reasonable measures to protect the site and any data we hold, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and restricted access to server systems. No website can be perfectly secure, but we keep what we collect to a minimum, which also limits the risk.
International transfers
Our hosting and service providers may store or process data in countries other than the one you live in. Where this happens, we rely on providers that use recognised safeguards for international data transfers.
Children
This site is meant for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Links to other websites
Our articles may mention or point to other websites, stores and platforms. We are not responsible for how those sites handle your data. Check their privacy policies before sharing information with them.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our practices change, for example if we add new partners, features or tools. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it was last revised. If a change significantly affects how we use your information, we will make it clear on the site.
Contact
If you have questions about this policy or want to make a privacy request, please reach us through the contact options on this site. We read every message and will get back to you.
