Meta Quest 4 release date, rumors and specs

There is no Meta Quest 4 yet. Meta has not announced one, given it a date or named a price, and its current flagship is still the Quest 3 from 2023. The most credible reporting points to Meta’s next major headset arriving no earlier than 2027, and it may not even carry the Quest 4 name.

Is there a Meta Quest 4?

Not as a product you can buy or preorder. Meta’s headset lineup right now is the Quest 3 and the cheaper Quest 3S. The Quest Pro has been discontinued, and Meta’s new hardware energy in 2025 went into glasses rather than headsets.

What does exist is a trail of reporting about Meta’s internal plans. Some of it comes from outlets with a strong record on Meta hardware, some from internal memos those outlets obtained, and very little from Meta itself. We grade each source below so you know how much weight a claim deserves.

People still search for “Oculus Quest 4” and “Oculus 4 release date,” so one housekeeping note first. The Oculus brand is gone. Facebook renamed itself Meta in October 2021, and the headsets dropped Oculus branding soon after. Any future headset will be sold under Meta’s name, so an “Oculus Quest 4” will never exist.

Quest 4 release date: what the reporting points to

Meta has never published a date. Here is how the timeline has shifted based on what reputable outlets have reported.

The original plan. In early 2023, The Information described an internal Meta roadmap presentation. It laid out the Quest 3 for 2023 and a cheaper headset for 2024, which became the Quest 3S. The Information has a proven record on Meta’s roadmap, and both of those products shipped roughly as described.

The Pismo period. In 2024, The Information’s Wayne Ma and Kalley Huang reported the codenames “Pismo Low” and “Pismo High” for two Quest 4 models aimed at 2026. Both Pismo models were later canceled and never shipped. This was the closest thing to a conventional Quest 4: two tiers, standalone, following the Quest 3 template.

The pivot to Puffin and Phoenix. Through 2025, The Information reported that Meta had shifted focus to a much lighter headset codenamed Puffin. Later reporting called it Phoenix. The design reportedly weighs around 100 grams and offloads the battery and processing into a tethered puck you keep in a pocket. The Information is a subscription outlet with a strong record on Meta’s hardware plans.

The delay. In December 2025, Business Insider reported on an internal memo saying Phoenix had slipped to the first half of 2027. That is the most recent credible date we have for Meta’s next headset.

So the honest answer to “when is the Quest 4 release date” is this: Phoenix, with its first-half 2027 window, is reportedly a separate ultralight mixed-reality glasses product with a tethered puck, not the Quest 4. The gaming-focused Quest 4, codenamed Griffin, is reported for the second half of 2027 at the earliest, and possibly 2028.

How that compares with past Quest launches

Meta’s release rhythm has never been steady, which is part of why predictions keep missing.

Headset Release date Launch price (US) Chip
Oculus Quest May 21, 2019 $399 Snapdragon 835
Oculus Quest 2 October 13, 2020 $299 Snapdragon XR2
Meta Quest Pro October 25, 2022 $1,499 Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1
Meta Quest 3 October 10, 2023 $499.99 Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2
Meta Quest 3S October 15, 2024 $299.99 Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2

The jump from Quest 2 to Quest 3 took about three years. Phoenix, reportedly targeted for the first half of 2027, is a separate ultralight glasses product rather than a direct Quest 3 successor, and a Quest 4 arriving in the second half of 2027 or later would put roughly four years or more between the Quest 3 and its successor. That is a long gap, but it is not out of character for Meta’s flagship line.

Meta Quest Headset Timeline Table

This is the full trail in order, with each source graded for reliability.

When What happened Source and reliability
Early 2023 Internal roadmap shows Quest 3 (2023) and a cheaper headset (2024) The Information, proven reporter
October 2023 Quest 3 launches at $499.99 Official, Meta
April 2024 Meta announces Horizon OS will be licensed to other headset makers, naming ASUS ROG and Lenovo Official, Meta
2024 Codenames Pismo Low and Pismo High linked to two Quest 4 models for 2026, both later canceled The Information, proven reporter
August 2024 Premium headset codenamed La Jolla reported cancelled The Information, proven reporter
September 2024 Connect 2024: Quest 3S announced, Orion AR glasses prototype shown Official, Meta
2025 Lightweight Puffin headset with tethered puck reported, about 100 g The Information, proven reporter
September 2025 Connect 2025: Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses at $799, no new headset Official, Meta
December 2025 Phoenix headset reportedly delayed to first half of 2027 Business Insider, internal memo
January 2026 Meta cuts about 10% of Reality Labs staff and closes several game studios Major outlets including Bloomberg

The January 2026 cuts matter for anyone waiting on a new Meta VR headset. Meta has said it is shifting Reality Labs spending toward AI glasses and wearables. That does not cancel future headsets, but it explains why the headset side of the roadmap keeps sliding.

Quest 4 price: nobody has reported a number

No credible outlet has published a Quest 4 price, and Meta certainly hasn’t. If you see a figure in a video thumbnail or a listing, it is a guess.

What we can say is where the floor and ceiling sit today:

  • The Quest 3S starts at $299.99 for 128GB, with a 256GB version at $399.99.
  • The Quest 3 now sells as a single 512GB model at $499.99, after Meta dropped the 128GB version in 2024.
  • The Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses cost $799 with the Neural Band wristband included.

Meta has historically priced its mainstream Quest headsets between $299 and $499. The Quest Pro at $1,499 flopped and was cut to $999 within months. Our read is that Meta knows a mass-market headset has to land near that $299 to $499 band. A puck-based Phoenix design with premium displays could easily sit above it, though. Treat any specific number as speculation until Meta says otherwise.

Comfort check

There is no official Quest 4 listing anywhere. Any site taking preorders or “reservations” for a Quest 4 is a scam, and your card issuer, not Meta, is your only route to a refund.

Quest 4 specs and design: what has been reported

Phoenix Tethered Puck Concept

Very little hardware detail has leaked through reliable channels. Here is what is on the record, and what is not.

Reported

  • Weight around 100 grams for the Puffin/Phoenix design, per The Information. For context, the Quest 3 weighs 515 grams.
  • A tethered compute puck that holds the battery and processing, connected by a cable. That is how Meta reportedly gets the headset itself so light.
  • Two tiers under the Pismo plan, a lower and higher model. Later reporting suggests this plan was set aside in favor of Phoenix.

Not reported by anyone credible

Resolution per eye, refresh rate, field of view, chip, battery life and storage. We have seen confident spec sheets floating around social media. None trace back to a source with a track record, and we won’t repeat them.

What a successor has to beat

The useful benchmark is the current lineup. Any next Quest needs to clear these numbers to be worth upgrading to.

Spec Meta Quest 3 Meta Quest 3S
Resolution per eye 2064 x 2208 1832 x 1920
Lenses Pancake Fresnel
Refresh rate Up to 120Hz Up to 120Hz
Field of view 110° horizontal, 96° vertical 96° horizontal, 90° vertical
Chip Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2
RAM 8GB 8GB
Weight 515 g 514 g
Battery life (Meta’s average) About 2.2 hours About 2.5 hours
Current price $499.99 (512GB) From $299.99

From our time with both headsets, the things we most want fixed are weight on the front of the face, battery life and the lack of eye tracking. The Quest Pro had eye tracking in 2022. Neither Quest 3 model does, and that holds back foveated rendering. A 100-gram headset with a pocket puck would solve the first problem on paper. Whether it fixes the other two is unknown.

How Meta’s glasses change the picture

The biggest reason there is no Quest 4 yet is that Meta’s priorities moved. The company’s Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses have sold far better than anyone expected. At Connect 2025, the star was the Meta Ray-Ban Display, a $799 pair of glasses with a small in-lens screen controlled by a wrist-worn Neural Band.

Meta also showed its Orion prototype AR glasses at Connect 2024. Orion is a true see-through augmented reality device, and Meta was clear it was not a consumer product. Mark Zuckerberg has described glasses as the long-term successor to the phone, and Meta’s spending has followed that view.

This changes what “the next Quest” means. Phoenix, as reported, sits between a headset and glasses: goggle-like, very light, powered from your pocket. It may be pitched as a new product category rather than a numbered Quest. We would not be surprised if the Quest 4 name never appears on a box, even if the device effectively replaces the Quest 3.

As glasses spread, so do the rules about where you can wear them. Camera-equipped eyewear is already restricted in some courts, schools and venues, which we track in our piece on “smart glasses bans and regulation.”

The competition that should push Meta

Meta’s Quest line had the standalone market mostly to itself for years. That is no longer true, and the pressure helps buyers.

  • Samsung Galaxy XR launched in October 2025 at $1,799, running Google’s Android XR platform with micro-OLED displays.
  • Apple Vision Pro got an M5 chip refresh in October 2025, still at $3,499 on visionOS.
  • Valve’s Steam Frame, announced in November 2025, is a standalone headset that also streams from a PC and plays SteamVR games. Valve has said it ships in early 2026 but has not published a price.

None of these replace a Quest for value. The Quest 3S remains the cheapest way into good standalone VR. The Steam Frame, though, goes straight at the PC VR players who used Quest 2 and Quest 3 as wireless SteamVR headsets. A strong showing from Valve could pressure Meta to keep a traditional standalone headset on the roadmap alongside Phoenix.

Should you wait for the Quest 4 or buy now?

Our answer is to buy now if you want VR this year. Waiting makes sense only if you already own a Quest 3 and are happy with it.

The math is simple. The earliest credible date for Meta’s next headset is the first half of 2027, and that date has already slipped once. Buying a Quest 3S today gives you well over a year of play before a successor could plausibly launch. Meta has also historically kept older headsets working with new Horizon OS releases for years.

Here is how we’d decide:

  • No headset yet, tight budget: Quest 3S from $299.99. Fresnel lenses are less sharp, but the game library is identical.
  • No headset yet, care about clarity and passthrough: Quest 3 at $499.99. The pancake lenses and higher resolution make a visible difference in text and mixed reality.
  • Own a Quest 2: Upgrade now. The Quest 3 is a big step in clarity, passthrough and performance, and waiting until 2027 or later is a long time on aging hardware.
  • Own a Quest 3: Wait. Nothing announced or credibly reported beats it on a timeline worth planning around.

If you do buy a Quest 3, a better strap and a battery pack fix most of its comfort complaints. Our guide to “meta quest 3 accessories” covers the ones we actually use.

Player tip

Your Quest purchases are tied to your Meta account, not the headset. Meta has kept game libraries working across Quest generations so far, so the “vr games” you buy on a Quest 3S should follow you to whatever comes next.

What we expect Meta to announce next

Meta Connect, held every September, is where Quest hardware traditionally gets revealed. The Quest 3 and Quest 3S were both announced at Connect. If Phoenix holds its reported first-half 2027 target, a reveal before then would fit Meta’s pattern. Connect 2026 would be the obvious stage.

Until Meta itself confirms a device, we treat everything in this article as reported plans, not product facts. Internal roadmaps change. La Jolla was cancelled. Pismo appears to have been shelved. Phoenix has already slipped once. We will update this page when Meta makes something official.

Comfort check

A tethered puck means a cable running from your pocket to your head. If Phoenix ships that way, plan for cable management in room-scale play, as a snag during fast movement is a trip and fall risk.

FAQ

Is there a Meta Quest 4?

No. Meta has not announced a Quest 4. Its current headsets are the Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Reporting from The Information and Business Insider describes a lightweight successor in development, but Meta has not confirmed it.

When is the Meta Quest 4 release date?

There is no official date. The most recent credible report, from Business Insider in December 2025, says Meta’s next headset, codenamed Phoenix, slipped to the first half of 2027. That window has moved before, so treat it as a target rather than a promise.

How much will the Quest 4 cost?

Nobody credible has reported a price. For reference, the Quest 3S starts at $299.99 and the Quest 3 costs $499.99. Any specific Quest 4 price you see online is a guess.

Will it be called the Oculus Quest 4?

No. Meta retired the Oculus brand after Facebook became Meta in 2021. The next headset might not even use the Quest 4 name, since reporting describes Phoenix as a different kind of device.

What specs will the Quest 4 have?

Only two details come from reliable reporting: a weight of around 100 grams and a tethered compute puck carrying the battery and processor. Resolution, field of view, refresh rate, chip and battery life have not been credibly reported.

Will my Quest 3 games work on the next Quest?

Meta has not said. Every Quest generation so far has carried the previous library forward on the same account, and we expect Meta to keep that up. It is still unconfirmed for any future headset.

Should I wait for the Quest 4?

Only if you already own a Quest 3. Everyone else should buy now, since the earliest credible launch window is at least a year away and has already been delayed once.
