Which Meta Quest storage size to pick, 128GB, 256GB or 512GB

Which Meta Quest storage size to pick, 128GB, 256GB or 512GB
October 28, 2026 Fact-checked by Margit Holm

For most players, we’d skip the Meta Quest 3 128GB and buy the 512GB model. Meta discontinued the 128GB Quest 3 in 2024 and cut the 512GB version to the same $499.99 price. The only 128GB and 256GB headsets Meta sells new are Quest 3S models.

All four run the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip with 8GB of RAM. Sale prices move often, so check the Meta Store before you buy.

Why 128GB fills up fast

There’s no microSD slot on either headset, and you can’t upgrade the internal storage. The capacity you pick is the capacity you live with.

The operating system takes its share first. After that, big releases can each use double-digit gigabytes, and recordings and mixed reality captures add more.

On 128GB, you’ll end up rotating games. Uninstalling is less painful for apps that back up saves to the cloud, though cloud backup is up to each developer and not every app supports it. Redownloading a large game every few weeks gets old quickly, though.

Player tip

If you mostly stream PC VR through Air Link or Steam Link, those games live on your PC. In that case 128GB on the headset is plenty.

There is no 256GB Quest 3

The Meta Quest 256GB option is a Quest 3S model only. It has the same chip as the Quest 3. The difference is the screen and lenses: Fresnel lenses and a lower resolution than the Quest 3’s sharper pancake optics.

For a budget buyer with a big library, the Meta Quest 3S 256GB makes sense. It also suits a family sharing one headset across several accounts.

The 512GB Quest 3 is the real value pick

At launch, 512GB cost $150 more than 128GB. Now the 512GB model costs what the 128GB did on day one.

You get the better display and four times the space of the old base model. We think that makes it the default choice for anyone who can afford a Quest 3.

Is a cheap used Quest 3 128GB worth it?

It’s only worth it at a clear discount below a new 512GB unit. If a used Quest 3 128GB costs about the same as a new Quest 3S 256GB, we’d still take the Quest 3 for its lenses. That assumes you play a small rotation of games or stream from PC.

Comfort check

On used units, confirm the seller factory reset the headset and removed it from their Meta account. Manufacturer warranty may not cover second-hand purchases.

Who should buy which

  • Quest 3S 128GB: a first headset on a tight budget, a handful of games, or mostly PC streaming.
  • Quest 3S 256GB: a budget buyer with a growing library, or a shared family headset.
  • Quest 3 512GB: most people. It has the best display and enough space that you won’t think about storage.
  • Used Quest 3 128GB: only when it’s clearly cheaper than the alternatives.

FAQ

Can you add storage to a Meta Quest 3?

No. There’s no card slot and no internal upgrade path. You need to pick your size at purchase.

Is the Quest 3S slower than the Quest 3?

No. Both use the XR2 Gen 2 with 8GB of RAM. The gap is in display resolution and lens type.

How many games fit on 128GB?

That depends on the games. Small indie titles barely dent the space, while a few large releases can fill much of the drive on their own.

Does Meta still sell the 128GB Quest 3 new?

No. Meta dropped it in 2024. You’ll find it refurbished, used or as leftover retail stock.
